چکیده

A combined use of SAR (ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat), visible and thermal infrared (NOAA AVHRR) and microwave radiometric (Aqua AMSR-E) images as well as the results of modeling were integrated to associate the SAR backscatter patterns observed in warm and cold seasons to physical and biological forcing processes between southern Sakhalin and northern Hokkaido-Kuril Islands. The Soya Warm Current front, a cold belt adjoining to the current from the north and synoptic-scale eddies propagating southeastward parallel to Hokkaido coast as well as spiral eddies in the Aniva Bay were studied in details. Spiral ice eddies the size of about 90 km with the spirals which in turn consist of 5-7 elliptical eddies the size of 7-10 km were found on ASAR images. The large-scale features of the ice eddies were also detected on AMSR-E images. The use of the multi-sensor synergetic approach improves and deepens interpretation of the SAR signatures.

Evidence of the West Sakhalin Current in Ers-2 and Envisat Collocated Sar Images

Collocated ERS-2 SAR and Envisat ASAR images acquired on 4 October 2003 with time difference of about 28 min have trapped the West Sakhalin Current (WSC) during its maximum intensity. The current was observed as a narrow strip the width of about 15 km adjacent to the northwestern Sakhalin coast. Backscatter contrasts in the convergence region between the Tsushima Current and the WSC reached 20 ...

Observations of Atmospheric Gravity Waves over the Chinese Seas by Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar

On synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired over the ocean often sea surface signatures of atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) as well as of oceanic internal waves are visible. They often look quite similar and it is not always easy to decide whether the wave-like patterns result from AGWs or from oceanic internal waves. In this paper we present criteria how to discriminate between these two...

Reprint 904 Atmospheric Phenomena Observed over the South China Sea by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar Onboard the Envisat Satellite

Atmospheric phenomena often leave fingerprints on the sea surface, which are detectable by synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Here we present some representative examples of SAR images acquired by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard the Envisat satellite over the South China Sea (SCS) which show radar signatures of atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) and of coastal wind fields. On SA...

The Synergy of Ers-2 Sar and Radarsat Sar Imagery of Sea-ice from the Kara Sea

This work investigates the use of multi-source images to classify sea-ice conditions in the South-western Kara Sea, and in doing so simulate the alternating mode which will be available from the ASAR sensor on board Envisat. The unique data set comprises SAR images obtained from both ERS-2 and Radarsat platforms over a 12 hour-period on 23 March 1997, which also provides a high temporal resolut...

Computation of Wind Field from Envisat Asar Wide Swath and Ers Sar Images without Any a Priori Information

A wavelet based methodology has been developed to retrieve the wind field over the sea surface from SAR images without any a-priori information of the wind direction. The method relies on the ability of the twodimensional continuous wavelet technique to detect the spatial structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL). The analysis of the geometric and radiometric characteristics of ...
